About

Katz Ruby & Carle is the go-to firm for high-stakes and complex business, commercial and intellectual property cases. In recent times, the price of high-end legal services has soared, even as the quality of those services has declined.  Katz Ruby & Carle was founded to cure that problem.

The Firm’s mission is to restore the time honored principles of practicing excellence and placing the client’s interests first.  Katz Ruby & Carle is by design a multi-generational boutique firm.  With its elite lawyers each at different stages of their career, they boast diverse and complimentary academic and professional experiences.  Katz Ruby & Carle leverages that rare dynamic to deftly and efficiently deliver outsized results for its clients

Our Team

Michael Katz

Managing Partner

A formidable force in litigation, Michael Katz’s three decades of experience and strategic acumen have resulted in numerous landmark victories.  As a former IP and business litigation partner at Morrison Foerster, Michael’s involvement and leadership in many high stakes cases and trials make him an unparalleled asset to the Firm’s clients.  Michael has represented a broad range of clients across many high-tech industries, including semiconductor, software, medical devices, healthcare, and biotech, as well as in traditional manufacturing, energy and agricultural sectors.  His corporate clients range from Fortune 100 companies to successful family-run or regional business.  He has also represented famous individuals such as Chuck Yeager, and the estates of Marilyn Monroe and the Marx Brothers.  While Michael enjoys a reputation for zealously representing his clients in court, many of his repeat clients rely on him to resolve discretely intractable problems to avoid litigation.

Byron Ruby

COO & Partner

With dual expertise in litigation and strategic advising at an elite management consultancy, Byron's practice areas include business disputes, securities, environmental law, and constitutional law issues, including First Amendment law, immunity doctrines, and anti-SLAPP motions.  Byron graduated summa cum laude from U.C. Berkeley and holds joint J.D-Masters from Yale University, and Harvard Law School, where he earned multiple Dean Scholar’s awards and graduated with Latin Honors.  He has published legal scholarship on the First and Eleventh Amendments.  Byron’s deep consulting experience advising Fortune 500 companies and other AmLaw Global Top 15 law firms gives him an unusually broad perspective, as well as a well-honed ability to manage complex problems, as the Firm’s COO. Previously, Byron served as a law clerk to the Honorable John W. Holcomb, United States District Court for the Central District of California, and externed with the Honorable Jeffrey Meyer, United States District Court for the District of Connecticut.  He has also worked for the U.S. Department of State, and interned with both the U.S. Department of Justice and DLA Piper in law school.

Nathan Carle

Partner

Nathan began his career in New York at global law firms for nearly a decade before relocating to California. During his career, Nathan has developed a broad ranging business litigation practice.  He has achieved out-sized results for both plaintiffs and defendants in trials, arbitrations, and mediations across numerous industries including finance, consumer goods, manufacturing, and real estate development and investment.  Since moving to a litigation boutique platform, Nathan has time and again achieved success against larger firms at trial and arbitration, often when representing parties with fewer resources than their adversaries. As such, Nathan is relied upon both as an advocate in the court room in high stakes cases and as a trusted advisor to negotiate and resolve contentious issues in complex business disputes of all kinds.  Nathan graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Columbia Law School, where he was twice a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.

Adam Sechooler

Attorney

Adam specializes in complex commercial disputes, intellectual property, and torts.  Although known for his extensive experience in state court, he has also submitted appellate briefs to the Ninth Circuit.  In addition to his active practice, Adam teaches classes at the U.C. Berkeley School of Law and the U.C. Irvine School of Law, including classes on trade secrets and legal writing and research.  Adam began his legal career at the firm of Greenberg Gross and served as law clerk to the Honorable John W. Holcomb, United States District Court for the Central District of California.  He graduated with one of the inaugural classes of the U.C. Irvine School of Law and holds a Masters degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

We believe in a client-first approach, where every case is handled with unmatched precision and dedication. Our goal is to not just represent, but to champion, those we serve.
